Tay Grin hopeful of Malawi’s tourism industry

Malawi’s newly-appointed tourism ambassador musician Tay Grin says he is committed to market Malawi’s tourism to attract international market.

Speaking in an interview on Friday upon his return from Zanzibar, Tanzania where he attended the Trace Music Awards, the artist said the event created a window of opportunity for Malawi.

“I was honoured to have a productive meeting with the Commissioner of Tourism in Zanzibar, Arif Abbas Manji, as we push forward my new role as the Malawi Tourism Council ambassador. Our key discussions focused on strengthening tourism ties between Malawi and Zanzibar through co-joint advertising, connecting operators, showcasing products, and enhancing infrastructure,” said Tay Grin.

The rapper described the Trace Awards in Zanzibar as a powerful catalyst for opportunity  industry growth.

During the ceremony, Tay Grin also engaged top industry leaders, global-performing artists, and influential platforms like Trace, BBC and Wasafi TV in to leverage business partnerships with Malawi.

He said: “I connected with Afro-beat ambassadors and pioneers in the UK such as 𝖣𝖩 Edu and Adesope Shopsydoo to explore how we can expand Malawi’s musical footprint worldwide. A key highlight was my meeting with the Trace team. We discussed the possibility of bringing the awards to Malawi.”

Tay Grin urged the local cultural and tourism players to network and be bold to boost the industry.

“Malawi is home to rich cultural and tourism, including places of great attraction such as the Fresh Lake Malawi and mountains. But we should strive to collaborate with big influencers, superstar events, and global platforms to amplify our destinations,” he said.

Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule hailed Tay Grin for exposing the country’s tourism potential.

She said: “We have seen how impressive the world stars turned up for the Trace Awards in our neighbouring Tanzania and it would be a great achievement if the same happens in Malawi.

“When world stars visit countries for assignments such as music events they are mainly interested in tourism activities such as cultural exchange experiences. Malawi is home to incredible tourism activities such as hiking and cruising.”
