On his part, long-time producer and collabolator Tapps Bandawe described Tay Grin’s 20-year music journey and growth as an artist as truly inspiring.

He said: “I first started working with him at the end of 2007, when I produced his first album the one with Two by Two and other tracks.

“I had never met someone as hard-working as Tay. Together, we would sit down and really think through the sounds that define Malawian music. His music is a unique blend of traditional and hip-hop elements and he approaches it with incredible dedication.

“Tay is not only hard-working, but also highly intelligent. It was a joy to work with someone who shares the same passion for fully understanding a musical concept before even stepping into the studio. A principle I was raised on as a producer, having been mentored by one of the world’s top producers who worked with major international artists.”

Bandawe said working with the artist was easy as Tay Grin had an impressive understanding of a concept and the steps required to bring it to life.

“As an artist, he has a clear vision. Many people underestimate how talented he is as an MC, rapper and overall performer,” he said.

Bandawe said even though they have worked on various projects over the years, what stands out about Tay Grin is his sense of loyalty.

“For instance, when he collaborated with DJ Slay on Chipapapa, the first thing he did was come to me and say, “I’ve worked with someone else, but I want your thoughts on this”. He consistently values collaboration and respect for his musical roots,” he said.

Bandawe added that watching Tay grow from a passionate artist to a respected statesman in Malawian music, has been a joy. Describing him as an artist who is still at the top of his game, with a deep love for Malawi and a genuine desire to see the country’s music industry thrive.
