Temwa chawinga: world women’s top scorer

Listen to this article

Temwa Chawinga continues to excel in women’s football with her exceptional skill. She was named the women’s top scorer in the world in 2023 with 63 goals by the International Federation of Football History. Temwa became the first African to achieve this feat. With that and many accolades to her name, there is nothing stopping the 25-year-old.

“I will keep on trusting God and I know I will make it,” said Scorchers striker Temwa Chawinga when she signed her first overseas contract with Swedish club Kvarnsvedens IK in September 2017.

True to her belief in the Almighty, the bully striker has over the past six years transformed from being a good player to becoming an extraordinary women football talent every club of international repute would love to have in their squad.

Just like her phenomenon elder-sister Tabitha, who has taken European women football by storm, Temwa is filled with a bag of skill, incredible stamina and an insatiable hunger for goals.

It is no surprise, therefore, to hear that she has signed a two-year deal with the United States of America’s top-flight league side Kansas City Current FC after her ever-impressive form in the Chinese Women’s Super League, where she inspired Wuhan Jiangda to a title defence in style.

She scored a hat-trick in their conclusive match in which they won 5-1 over Zhejiang to seal her Golden Boot Award with a total of 30 goals, 14 goals ahead of second top scorer Barbara Banda of Zambia, who plays for runners-up Shanghai.

“Temwa is an exciting player and we are very happy she has chosen to come to Kansas City,” said her new club’s general manager Camille Ashton through Kansas City website www.kansascitycurrent.com.

The club’s head coach Vlatko Andonoviski also waxed lyrical about the capabilities of their new-catch: “She is a dynamic player who has shown she can find the goal at every stop along her path, she will be fun to watch. I am excited for Temwa to join us in Kansas City.”

Temwa’s latest move to the Missouri State-based side came barely a day after she was named the women’s top scorer in the world in 2023 with 63 goals by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics to become the first African to achieve that feat.

The 25-year-old former Blantyre Zero (FCB Nyasa Bullets Women) and DD Sunshine (Silver Strikers Women) forward also won the 2023 Cosafa Women’s Championship golden boot with nine goals after inspiring the Scorchers to their historic title.

Alongside her France-based sister Tabitha, she was nominated for 2023 CAF Africa Women’s Footballer of the Year accolade.

On her new deal, Temwa said she could not comment as she was waiting for her Chinese manager to brief her about the latest development but she recently told the media that she was eager to make a move to another challenging league after winning almost everything on offer in the Chinese league.

“I have been with Wuhan for four years and we have won almost everything that was on offer. We have won the league four consecutive times, the FA Cup twice and the Women’s National Cup twice as well,” she explained.

“Individually, I have also won a number of golden boots, including twice in the league and three times in cup competitions. It has been an amazing journey and I can only thank God for His blessings.”

Malawi National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) chairperson Adelaide Migogo said it feels good to see Temwa, alongside her elder sister, doing their best to continue putting Malawi women’s football on the map.

“Temwa and Tabitha are a great inspiration to young girls, who would love to become women football players in the country and beyond. We are very proud of their achievements and we expect more fireworks from them,” she said.

  1. I loved you better than you would ever be able to express here. The picture is beautiful, and your wording is elegant; nonetheless, you read it in a short amount of time. I believe that you ought to give it another shot in the near future. If you make sure that this trek is safe, I will most likely try to do that again and again.
