Temwa goals ends club’s losing run
US-based Malawian female footballer Temwa Chawinga’s strike against Utah Royals yesterday ended her team KC Current’s three-match winless streak in the National Women’s Soccer League.
The Scorchers forward scored the lone goal in the 47th minute to take her tally to 15 goals.
She still leads the scorers’ chart with second -placed fellow African Barbara Banda trailing by three goals
Temwa has now scored in unprecedented eight consecutive league matches.
In an interview yesterday, the 25-year-old said as a team, they were happy to get back to winning ways.
She said: “As I always say, the team comes first and the win will definitely lift our spirits as we look to regain form.
“Big up to the girls, we fought all the way and deserved the win.”
Despite the win, KC Current remain third in the 14-team US women’s top-flight with 38 points from 19 matches.
As of yesterday, they were six points behind leaders Orlando Pride, who had a game in hand and three points adrift of second-placed Washington Spirits.
National Women’s Football Association president Adellaide Migogo said Temwa has becomes KC Current’s heartbeat .
She said: “She has carried a team on her shoulders and her X-factor is making a difference.
“Most of the big-name women African footballers are playing in the US and she is standing out.”
