Temwa wins Player of the Month award

USA-based Malawian women’s football icon Temwa Chawinga has won the first Player of the Month accolade in rthe 2025 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season.

It is the fourth time for the Kansas City (KC) Current forward to win the award, having won it on three occasions in 2024 to become the first player since 2014 to win it three times in a single season.

The Scorchers striker has picked up from where she left off last season, powering the club to three straight wins and scoring a goal in all three matches to top the league standings.

She scored the first goal of the season for the Current in a 3-1 win over the Portland Thorns and added another goal in stoppage time to secure a 2-0 win against Washington Spirit a week later.

Temwa also set a new record by scoring in her eighth straight NWSL regular season game during a 3-0 win over the Utah Royals on March 29. This matched the streak she set in 2024.

According to ksb.com, the 26-year-old has scored in 15 of her last 16 regular season matches.

She has also netted a goal in her last seven regular season games, marking the second longest streak in NWSL history behind her league-record eight-match run.

Temwa is also the NWSL single-season record holder for goal contributions with 20 goals and six assists in 2024.

She continued to etch herself in the history books by becoming the first player in NWSL history to score 20 goals in a single season as well as score against every NWSL team since the league expanded to 14 teams.
