Teveta, Ecam sensitise firms to levy payment
Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (Teveta) in collaboration with Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (Ecam) on Friday held a productivity enhancement programme to emphasise to employers the importance of paying Tevet levy.
Speaking in an interview after the event in Blantyre, Teveta director of quality assurance Patrick Mputeni said the levy, which is collected by Malawi Revenue Authority, is used to fund various initiatives, including equipping institutions and technical colleges and offering subsidies.

“We thought it was important to use this platform to inform them about the importance of complying with the law by paying the levy,” he said.
Mputeni said there is need for such meetings to raise awareness among companies on the need to understand the importance of Tevet levy.
Ecam executive council member Richard Kunjawa said the levy is used to fund Teveta programmes that enhance skills development and workforce productivity.
He noted that compliant employers can benefit from these programmes, while stressing the importance of continued dialogue to encourage compliance.
Said Kunjawa: “Our task at Ecam is two-fold. Firstly, we need to inform our members about the levy and the necessity of paying it.
“Secondly, we must emphasise the importance of compliance. By working together, we are urging employers to cooperate and adhere to the law as paying the levy is crucial for enhancing productivity in Malawi.”
MRA started collecting Tevet levy on November 1 2015 following the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Teveta, which was part of reforms to improve service delivery.
