The return of queues is a sure sign

My lord, we are now used to queuing for everything in Nyasaland. The sugar queues have become the norm for Nyasas and even the local bread is bought through some hustle.

The queues for everything are a telltale sign of the deteriorating standards and of an economy that has gone kaput. Of course beneficiaries of a broken system will rush to vilify some of us and defend the indefensible.

Thefuel queues are back for the umpteenth time and what are they going to say now?

My lord, it is in times like these when you realise that the authority you wield at your workplace or the make of a car you drive does not define you as a privileged person.

My lord, if you were ever in doubt about who is now calling the shots in Nyasaland I will tell you; it is neither the cockerel nor friends of Lazaro.

It i s most l y the fuel attendant and his semi-illiterate Kabaza friend who are now efficiently running a fuel cartel because the Moribund Oil Company of Nyasaland (Mocuna) and others have spectacularly failed. Do not forget the influence of Mibale yathu, too, on the avai labi lity of some of the precious commodities like sugar.

When I told you that we embraced the Kabaza economy when Tokha Are Liars ascended the throne, my lord, people laughed at me that I was being melodramatic.

But you can agree, my lord, that Kabaza guy and mibale yathu deserve more respect than the everyday politician of yours.

My lord, you wouldn’t want to make a mistake of angering the fuel attendant when you are about to fuel because he might decide otherwise regardless of the fact that you spent hours on the queue.

The kabaza guy who is in cahoots with the attendant can make you wait for a decade before he serves you until his friend’s jerry cans are filled.

The illegal sugar trader is one controlling the country’s economy under the watch of the same Nyasaland government.

But I wouldn’t blame the Kabaza guy and his Mibale yathu col l eague. They have been forced to run the economy because the authorities have abdicated their responsibilities.

Handling a cri s is or bringing a long term solution has not been a strength of the regime in power, otherwise how do you explain the recurrence of crises such as the fuel one?

My lord, don’ t s tar t lecturing me in how we are failing to generate enough forex and how we have generally allowed ourselves to import almost everything.

Now t h at we h av e normalised the queuing for essential products in this small country, yet it is business as usual for those we expect to act in crises, we will be compelled to conclude, my lord, that the people who are entrusted to run the country on our behalf are not helping us at all.

They have been entrusted with the responsibi lity of guiding Nyasaland to prosperity, but all we are being bombarded with are excuses and more excuses.

My l o rd, i f l eader s continue to abdicate, the Kabaza economy will weigh in again.

My lord, I expect the Kabaza team to once fill the gap and solve the challenges which should have been handled by those we elected into power.

Are we really a crisis nation or is it the question of everything rising and falling on political leadership? Don’t get obsessed with forthcoming elections before solving current challenges.

Regards,

John Citizen.
