Tight race keeps Bullets on fifth position

Big Bullets have put to bed crisis talk, collecting four vital points on the road over the weekend. But the close TNM Super League contest has the People’s Team still placed fifth on 23 points.

A 2-2 draw with rookies Mponela United at Silver Stadium on Saturday paved the way for a sweet 2-0 beating of presumably tougher opposition Blue Eagles the following day at Nankhaka Stadium.

What pleased Bullets coach Eddington Ng’onamo the most was that he threw Samson Chonde and Brown Mizeyi into the starting line-up and responded with a goal in each half.

The Eagles remain third on 24 points just like second-positioned Mighty Wanderers and leaders Red Lions. But the Bullets join on 23 points fourth-placed Kamuzu Barracks.

Buoyed by their large entourage of fans wherever they go, Bullets outclassed the hosts in all departments and, deservedly, collected three points.

Even a modest Eagles coach, Deklerk Msakakuona could not help but admit that his side was not a match to the Bullets performance.

“We lost the game early on as we could not win the ball. It was bad luck as we failed to play our passing game. It was simply not our day and I congratulate Bullets on the win,” said Msakakuona in a post-match brief.

Ng’onamo made changes to the team that played Mponela. He started Mizeyi, Chonde in attack in place of Yamikani Fodya and Heston Munthali.

In goals, he featured Owen Chaima instead of Swadick Sanudi who played against Mponela.

Chonde put Bullets ahead 13 minutes into the game. His goal was pure instinct. He got a pass from Divason Mlozi and with two defenders guarding him in the box, he made a quick turn and let loose a powerful volley that hit the roof of the net.

Mizeyi scored the second goal for Bullets in the 54th minute.

A well-taken corner by Henry Kabichi caused a melee in Eagles box as Eagles defenders failed to clear the ball and Mizeyi.
