Turning campus needs into opportunities

Prince Mbekeani, a fourth-year accountancy student at University of Livingstonia, is proving that young people can turn simple ideas into impactful businesses. Inspired by a need for recreational space on his campus, Mbekeani transformed a casual idea into a thriving chill spot for students and locals alike, complete with pool tables, food, music, and entertainment options. His journey, however, has not been without challenges, as he navigates the complexities of balancing his studies with the demands of entrepreneurship. Contributor MADALITSO MTUKULA talked with him to get his insights.

Prince Mbekeani: Starting business was tough

Q: Tell us about yourself?

A: I am Prince Mbekeani, a fourth-year student pursuing a degree in accountancy at University of Livingstonia, Kaning’ina campus but I reside in Lilongwe.

Q: How did you start your business?

A: To fill a gap on our campus, I launched a chill spot where students can relax, play pool, enjoy food and music, and socialise. My research showed students needed recreational space, and my business aims to be the ultimate destination for unwinding and having fun.

Q: Where did you get the inspiration to start your business?

A: To be honest, I did not get inspired by anyone in particular. I just noticed how much people love playing pool, so I did some research. I figured, why not create a business around it? But I wanted to make it more exciting, so I added food, football streaming, and video games – something for everyone.

Q: What are you targeting with your business?

A: My business serves two markets: Livingstonia University students, due to its proximity to the campus, and the broader local community, providing a welcoming space for all.

Q: Have you ever done any business before?

A: Before starting my current business, I was involved in a few different ventures. I had a 360 video booth, which was a lot of fun. I also sell clothes, shoes, and electronic gadgets. And, I am a partner with Happy Fit.

That experience really helped me develop some valuable skills and knowledge that I’m now applying to my current business.

Q: What challenges have you faced in your business?

A: Honestly, starting this business was tough. I underestimated the time and resources needed. As a student, finding millions to invest was a huge challenge. But I did not give up. It took four months instead of one, but we made it happen. Financing was the biggest headache, but God saw me through.

Q: What advice can you give to fellow youths who want to start a business aside the things that they do in their daily lives.

A: Hey guys, if you have got an idea, just go for it! Do not let fear hold you back. Take baby steps, do not rush, and focus on each level. There will be challenges, but that is part of the journey. Ignore negative thoughts and people who say you cannot do it because you are young. Believe in yourself and your potential.

As youth, we are capable of achieving greatness if we set clear goals, stay focused, and support each other. So, do not let anyone bring you down. You have got this. Stay committed to your dream, and remember, everything is possible if you put your all into it.
