Two arrested in Ombudsman robbery

Police in Lilongwe have arrested two people suspected to have broken into the house of Ombudsman Tijilane Chizumila at Natural Resources College (NRC) where they stole money and property valued at K2.6 million. Lilongwe Police spokesperson Ramsey Mushani said the arrest demonstrates that police are working hard to fight crime.

“The arrest of the suspects is a great breakthrough for the police as it will lead to the capture of other criminals,” said Mushani. The two suspects were identified by police as Alfred Banda Tsegula, 21, and Maulana Mkukumira, 28. The two were arrested at Chigwilizano Township in the city where they were hiding. Mushani said the two suspects, in the company of others who are still at large, invaded Chizumila’s house where they attacked and harassed her in broad day light. They went away with cash, cell phones and other items valued at K2.6 million.

Tsegula comes from Nandawe Village in Thyolo while Mkukumira comes from Ngolowindo Village in Traditional Authority Maganga in Salima. Mushani said the suspects will answer charges of robbery with violence.—Mana
