UNDP powers police ahead of Sept 16 polls
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has given the Malawi Police Service (MPS) forensic and information, communication and technology (ICT) equipment to boost its operations ahead of the September 16 2025 General Election.
Speaking during the handover at Police Headquarters in Lilongwe on Monday, Police Commissioner responsible for research and planning Dennis Chipawo said the equipment will play a vital role in ensuring peace and order during the election period and beyond.

He said: “We have already mapped out violence hotspots and with this equipment, it will be easy for us to respond timely to any incident of violence.
“The equipment will also reduce time taken when conducting investigations, thereby ensuring speedy delivery of justice. I must assure people that the police will provide them with maximum security.”
Chipawo added that the ICT equipment will enhance the capacity of the police service and enable them to respond to technology-aided crimes.
On her part, UNDP resident representative Fenella Frost urged the police to be vigilant and increase visibility as the country heads the elections.
“This equipment should assist you in your operations. We appreciate the role you play in ensuring peace and order. This equipment should go beyond the elections, we want you to provide the best security to the people,” she said.
In January, the police launched a policy which ensures protection of women during election period following women rights activists complain that women, especially those vying for political positions, face hostility and abuse.
