Unicaf University says it is striving to improve the economic development of communities by enhancing natural environment.

Speaking on Wednesday in Lilongwe when the university’s academic staff and students partnered Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) staff members in planting 1500 trees around Katete Farm, Unicaf  vice chancellor Robert Ridley said they want to help preserve the ecosystem within LWB catchment area.

He said: “We thank Unicaf University and LWB for the Go Green initiative launched by the Malawi Government.

“As a university, we emphasise our vision to support economic development through environmentally sustainable practices.”

One of the students, Henry Jamali commended the university for instilling the spirit of caring for the environment.

On his part, LWB director of production and distribution Engineer Gustaff Chikasema said planting trees will help reduce environmental degradation at the board’s catchment area.

“It is my hope that the partnership will continue in helping to take care of the new trees to enhance survival rate,” he said.

In 2021, the university signed the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals Accord, committing to the responsible consumption and production as well as to work in partnership with national and international organisations to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The university has been shortlisted as a finalist in the UN-sponsored Green Gown International Awards as Sustainability Institution of the Year 2021.
