Water Mission Malawi has joined the cholera fight by donating medical supplies and other relief items worth about K30 million to the Lilongwe District Health Office.

The donated items include 10 000 sachets of oral rehydration salts, 100 tins of chlorine, and 250 cartons of tablet laundry soap.

Speaking during the handover ceremony on Friday, Water Mission Malawi country manager Nixon Sinyiza said the donated items will be distributed to 15 primary schools and six communities in Lilongwe.

He said most urban areas in Malawi are at risk of air and waterborne diseases due to poor planning and the ever-increasing rural-urban migration for what is perceived to be better livelihood.

Sinyiza said: “With the squatters in and around town, most have little or no access at all to potable water and our waste disposal systems leave a lot to be desired. This is part of the problem. We, therefore, need to invest a lot of efforts in improving the country’s hygiene standards”

Bwaila Hospital senior medical officer YankhoLuwe, who received the donation on behalf of the DHO, said they are grateful for the gesture from Water Mission Malawi.

He assured that the DHO has put in place necessary measures to ensure the donated items are used for their intended purpose.

Lilongwe DHO spokesperson Richard Mvula said the interventions by the DHO and its partners have started yielding desired results.

“Communities are now responding favourably to the sensitisation campaigns.” said Mvula. n
