Wealth Magazine honours 100 women

Wealth Magazine, a local entrepreneurial and business magazine, has named its 100 most influential women from various fields for their outstanding work in the society.

In an interview yesterday, Wealth Magazine chief executive officer Harry Chima said the women were nominated through a poll they conducted by looking at the inspiring work, business exploits and achievements of the women.

He said: “This is a continuous process. In our editions from June to December, we will continue to compile and release the eight inspiring Malawians who will accumulate into the next 100 inspiring women.”

Chima said this is an annual list and more women will be recognised in future, adding that this is the magazine’s way of celebrating phenomenal women.

This year, Wealth Magazine will present the Lifetime Achievement Award to retired Chief Justice Anastanzia Msosa, who also served as chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission.

Reacting to the news, one of the 100 women on the list, fashion designer Xandria said she felt honoured.

One of the keynote speakers poet Tendai Shaba said he was excited to associate with inspiring women.

He said: “I am all for the gender movement and advocating for the gender balance as I have done numerous times through my poetry and this event comes at the right time.”

Other women on the list include First Lady Monica Chakwera, the Vice-President’s spouse Mary Chilima, Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule, Nation Publications Limited chief executive officer Mbumba Banda, investigative journalist Rebecca Chimjeka, netballer Mwawi Kumwenda, female footballer Tabitha Chawinga, Anti-Corruption Bureau director general Martha Chizuma, this author and many others.

The official ceremony to unveil the inspiring women is scheduled to take place on Friday at Bingu International Conventional Centre in Lilonwe under the theme ‘Inspire equity’.
