Welcome to Chitipa, the land of plenty

Listen to this article

Chitipa_marketChitipa District in the Northern Region is known for its language and diet diversification. No wonder, it is not among the districts hardest hit by the food shortage that has affected over 1.5 million people in the country. Going to Misuku Market, for example, one sees a lot of foodstuffs ranging from fruits and vegetables to green maize, bananas, beans and Irish potatoes not imported from Dedza or Ntcheu, but grown in the fertile hills of Misuku. In the photograph, people are seen buying and selling their produce at the market. —BRIGHT KUMWENDA, Staff Writer

  1. If we can improve rural roads in Chitipa district, we can feed the whole country. If we can extend a tarmarc road of about 70km from Chitipa to Nakonde (Zambia) and Tunduma (Tanzania), we can open Malawi’s access to the sea through the TAZARA railwayline. In addition this road can give us access to the TAZAMA oil pipeline. Chitipa is the gateway to Malawi’s reliable connection to the world. As the most culturally diverse district, minerally rich, agriculturally rich, a highly literate population, all are welcome to invest in this jewel of Malawi.

  2. Districts like Chitipa are naturally blessed with a lot of natural resources and the district has a lot to offer to the country. It is surprising however,to note that late Dr Banda and Bakili Muluzi didn’t have the interest to develop the district at least with a tarmac road.I even wonder why Malawi can’t have a railway line connecting with Tanzania from Chitipa and Karonga. This railway could even reach Lilongwe through Nyika and Mzuzu.A country with a railway network develops faster than the one without it.

  3. Bravo Misuku! But a few pieces of advice for sustainability:
    1 STOP stream bed /bank cultivation,it dries-up the wetland
2 STOP cut/slash & BURN system of Millet & Upland Rice cultivation,it leads to erosion & degrada tion
3 CONTINUE terraci ng for ALL CROPS on slopes of 25% & >
4 CONTINUE crop residue management including CONSERVA TION AGRICULTURE

GOOD-LUCK AN’ GOD BLESS MISUKU AREA
