Who is Maxwell Mkwezalamba?
Dr Maxwell Mkwezalamba is one accomplished Malawian economist who has held several portfolios both locally and internationally.
Until March 27 this year, Mkwezalamba was African Union (AU) commissioner for economic affairs, a position he held since May 2004.
Prior to his appointment as AU commissioner, Mkwezalamba served in various capacities in Malawi and the United States of America (USA). For example, Mkwezalamba, between 2003 and 2004 served as macroeconomist at the World Bank’s Malawi Country Office. He also served as principal secretary at the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development from 2000 to 2003. He also worked as country economist at the World Bank in Washington DC.
In an earlier interview with The Nation, Carlos Lopes, executive secretary of the United Nations Commission for Africa (Uneca) described Mkwezalamba as a man of integrity who will greatly be missed.
Said Lopes: “Maxwell has come to the end of his tenure at the AU, we cannot ask for more but wish him prosperity and success in his future endeavours.”
