Sponsors of the Paul-Mike Individual Chess Tournament have announced that they have doubled the winner’s purse from K50 000 (about $125) to K100 000 (about $250) effective next year.

One of the sponsors Paul Nyirenda said this last Sunday at Sports Council in Blantyre during the prize presentation for the inaugural contest that saw candidate master Chiletso Chipanga beating Alfred Chimthere 6.5 – 5.5 points after the extensive 12-game finals last week.

“I can confirm now is that we will continue supporting the event and next year’s winner will take home K100 000 (about $500). We are impressed with how the inaugural event has been conducted,” said Nyirenda, who finances the contest in partnership with his friend Mike Mshali.

According to Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) publicist Gilton Mkumbwa, defending champion Chipanga has been seeded for the 2014 finals while Chimthere has made it into the national qualifiers alongside the country’s highly rated players Joseph Nyambalo and Chuma Mwale.

“Chimthere, Nyambalo and Mwale and three regional champions will battle it out in the national encounters to identify Chipanga’s challenger in the 12-match grand finale,” Mkumbwa said.
