World Vision Malawi has donated 167 desks and nine office chairs worth K104 million to Mchenga and Mpimbi primary schools under Nsambe Education Zone in Neno District.

Speaking on Thursday during the handover at Mchenga Primary School, World Vision Neno district programmes manager Samson Semu said the organisation made the donation to improve the learning environment in the schools.

“One of the organisation’s aspirations in 21-25 strategy is to ensure children are able to read and write at an early age. For this to happen, learners need to have a good learning environment and this includes facilities such as desks, among many others,” he said.

Learners enjoy the new desks

Semu said the donation was part of the organisation’s contribution to government’s efforts to uplift education standards in the district.

He thanked World Vision United States of America for supporting the donation in Chilimbondo Area Programme.

Nsambe Education Zone primary education adviser Mixion Migoza thanked World Vision Malawi for the donation, saying most schools in the zone do not have desks.

He said Mchenga Primary School, which has an enrolment of 1 314 learners, did not have desks.

Migoza said: “The desks will boost enrolment as other learners were not coming to school because they were sitting on the floor.

“However, apart from lack of desks, the school also has inadequate toilets and does not have changing rooms for girls.”

He advised the beneficiary schools to take care of the desks to serve learners for many years.

Standard Eight learner Francis Malemia also commended World Vision Malawi for the gesture, saying the desks will improve school attendance.

“The desks will motivate learners to stay in school. Against, girls will now be able to participate in class because they will sit in desks,” she said.
