About 30 youths are taking up a challenge to Mount Mulanje’s highest peak, Sapitwa, in a three-day trek that starts today.

Patron for the organisers Youth Hub, Humphreys Kapito, says the excursion is about fun, physical fitness, appreciation of nature and exploration.

“We are also about promoting local tourism. This is not the first time we are on this challenge, but each time is a fresh experience,” he said.

According to Kapito, this is the first excursion since the Covid-19 tide that set them off.

“We are wary of the heat wave and we know it will be more challenging, but the hikers are getting set for it,” he said.

Another organiser, James Nyasulu, said the hike will also provide time for socialisation.

“From the group, I know very few and I know for most of us it will be a time to make new friends and new connections that will certainly translate to new opportunities and creative ideas,” he said.

Nyasulu added that the group will trek from Likhubula through the Skyline Path to Chisepo Hut where they will spend a night before peaking Sapitwa. On the way back on Sunday, after another night at Chisepo Hut, they will pass through the Chapaluka Path where they will pass by the popular Dziwe la Nkhalamba.
