Youths appeal for road rehab in Karonga Town
Youths in Karonga Town have appealed to elected leaders and well-wishers to upgrade a road from Karonga Stadium to Maghemo on the M1.
In the communication, the concerned youths have emphasised the importance of the said road to the community, saying it connects people from Masoko, Mwanganda, Mwanyongo, Chinese, Peter Mwangalaba to the hospital and football lovers to Karonga Stadium.

The communication reads in part: “We would like to bring to the attention of well-wishers, community leaders, our ward councillors and member of Parliament for Karonga Town Constituency about the poor condition of the road from the stadium and connects the Fisheries Road and joins Maghemo Road.
“During the rainy season, this road becomes almost impassable, especially for vehicles. Many people fail to reach the hospital in time due to the bad condition of the road.”
In an interview, youth representative Jimmy Mzilahowa justified their petition, saying as the area’s citizens, they felt obliged to pen relevant authorities about the road.
“We appreciate the efforts which some residents have taken by using their own resources to rehabilitate the most damaged parts of the road. Their commitment shows how important this road is to all of us,” he said.
In a separate interview, Karonga Town Development Committee chairperson Fwasani Chikolopa Silungwe said the roads in question are the committee’s priority area.
“That road is in the Karonga Town Council 2026/27 Annual Investment Plan. It will be reshaped with gravel to ensure effective drainage,” he said.
