Feza, Oneal go traditional in wedding task

There was pomp, colour and fanfare in the Ruby house Wednesday evening, when Oneal visited Feza’s parental home to officially ask for her hand in marriage.

Actually, Malawian or Chewa wedding songs were sung in the Ruby house all afternoon Tuesday as the housemates prepared to complete their wedding task.

Oneal, who was accompanied by his uncles, Elikem and Angelo, cut a dashing figure in colourful traditional wear fit for an African prince, as he moved a step closer to officially making Feza his wife. The blushing bride couldn’t contain her excitement as her sister Fatima, mom Natasha and aunt Annabel put the finishing touches on her dowry garb.

Everything seemed to be going according to plan until the bride’s father, Sulu, showed up to the dowry negotiations drunk as a skunk. Sulu, the overprotective father gave his future in-laws a piece of his mind as he stumbled about the lounge and reminded them just how precious his princess is.

The bride’s mother, Natasha, was also as loud as they come and insisted that the in laws stick around for a lecture on how to treat her precious daughter. Fatima had no time to relax as she was sent from pillar to post, catering to the groom and his family’s needs. She finally managed to catch her breath, however, when Sulu ordered that the dowry negotiations start.

After going back and forth trying to come up with a bride price everyone would be happy with, both families reached a consensus. The dowry will not be cattle, or any beast for that matter. Instead, Oneal’s family needs to show up with carrots, cornflakes, cooking oil, cheese and lots of alcohol. Once all the admin had been sorted out, both families settled in for a huge celebratory feast, whipped up by the woman of the house, Natasha. “If I get married to Oneal one day, I want to wear the traditional Nguni hat, because Oneal is from Botswana. Wow, this feels so real”, Feza said, as the Rubies got out of character.
