Season 4 of the Spell Master Spelling Bee made history last Sunday at St Patrick’s International Academy in Blantyre after a pupil from a public primary school made it to the regional final.

Tadala Masamba, from Nanjiriri Primary School in Blantyre, got all his words correct in all the three rounds to become the only speller from a public school to score all three. Previous contests have been dominated by pupils from private schools.

Masamba said: “It feels good to emerge the best speller from the public primary school. At the same time it shows potential of every learner regardless of the school he or she goes to.”

A total of 170 students competed in individual brilliance in spelling English words with clarity and confidence. But only 36 out of 91 spellers in the junior category made it to the regional bee.

In the senior category, only 17 out of the 79 senior spellers qualified for the regional bee. Only three girls scored their words right.

The spelling bee is organised by Spell Master Educational Communications, with technical support from the Department of Inspectorate and Advisory Services under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and produced by First Dawn Arts with broadcasting partnership with Zodiak TV and radio.
