16 set for Miss Malawi finals

It’s official! Sixteen girls will compete for the Miss Malawi crown in April this year.

After a nationwide search, four contestants from the North, six from the South and another six from the Central Region stand a chance of being the next Malawi’s beauty queen.

During the Central Region finals that took place on Saturday at Bingu International Convention Centre (Bicc), eight contestants battled it out in four categories of casual and beach wear, traditional and evening attire.

The lucky ones: The six ladies that made it to the finals from the Central Region

The night of glitz and glamour saw the eight, Chimwemwe Ngugi Buleya, Angella Tonthola, Sibongire Chilumpha, Chisomo Salunda, Maned Kapotwe, Mwabi Mfune, Rossana Luhanga and Chikondi Chunga taking turns impressing the judges and wowing the audience as they rocked the red carpeted runway.

The judges—Margaret Chaika from Standard Bank, Thoko Mkawa from Fortune Events and Zuanaid Aziz of Blockbuster Megastore—made it known from the word go that they were “looking for a full package,” perhaps that did not have much of a deeper meaning to the contestants until question time came.

A single question: “Who do you think is responsible for rapid population growth in Malawi?’’ was posed to all contestants. The session was designed in such a way that the other contestants could not hear it and the responses until when on stage.

Some contestants struggled with giving a precise answer and others excelled with so much ease  to the satisfaction of the patrons.

At the end of the event, Mfune, Chilumpha, Buleya, Chunga, Luhanga and Kapotwe made it into the finals of Miss Malawi 2018 to be held in April at the same venue.

Mwabi walked away with a double bed and mattress worth K250 000 sponsored by Blockbuster for being crowned Miss Face.

To spice up the event, gospel artist Patience Namadingo once again proved why he is among the top musicians of the moment as he dazzled the audience with his music ingenuity.

A number of patrons walked away with different prizes, including sandwich makers won during raffle draw.

Some of the sponsors for the Central Region finals were Tionge Chavula of Beauty Book, Grace Nsonga of Grace Garment Zone and Maggie Chimtengo of Mzacc Designs.
