18 Ethiopians netted for illegal entry
Malawi Police in Karonga on Thursday night arrested 18 Ethiopians for entering the country illegally using unchartered routes.
Karonga Police public relations officer Enock Livason confirmed the arrest, saying the suspects have been charged with the offence of entering Malawi without following procedures.
“We received a tip-off from members of the public that they [immigrants] are hiding in a certain house at Luhimbo Village in the area of Paramount Chief Kyungu. We went there and apprehended them and they are currently in custody,” said Livason.
He said their ages range between 16 and 28 years.
“They have been charged with the offence of entering Malawi illegally and are expected to appear before the court,” he said.
Meanwhile, police are hunting for a man who was allegedly providing refuge to the immigrants.
