21 women aspirants file MEC nomination papers in Salima

Salima district elections officer Alinafe Chisenga says all the district’s 21 women aspirants who paid for nominations have submitted papers to cement their intention to contest in September 16 General Election.

In an interview on Wednesday, she said the exercise progressed with less challenges

Said Chisenga: “Some aspirants were coming without general receipts, the process could not proceed without scanning the receipt.

“So, we helped them by photocopying the receipts in our custody which was time-consuming because they had to come to our offices to access that assistance.”

An independent candidate for Salima South Constituency, Alice Kumanda, expressed happiness after filing her papers.

She emphasised her need to contest and said nomination papers are a step in that direction.

“Now it is time for campaign and we all have chances,” said Kumanda.

She appealed to all registered voters to turn out in large numbers to vote on polling day.

Another candidate, Jessie Kabwila (Malawi Congress Party), vowed to take every opportunity to reclaim the Salima Central West seat after a six-year absence.

“I am ready to work with my people whom I dearly missed for the past years and I hope to win,” she said.

Kabwila, who is also MCP publicity secretary and Minister of Higher Education, pledged to work with the people once voted into office.

National Initiative for Civic Education Salima programmes officer Queen Mataya described the number of women aspirants as encouraging.
