4 super league teams pass test

Four clubs that failed to meet licensing requirements have beaten a Football Association of Malawi (FAM) deadline to address shortfalls and participate in the 2022 TNM Super League.

Initially, FAM’s First Instant Body (FIB) granted licences to 12 clubs to participate in the TNM Super League next season after meeting club licensing requirements.

But the four, Red Lions, Rumphi United, Kamuzu Barracks and Mighty Tigers failed to meet the requirements and were given upto last Friday to do so.

They now join Civil Service United, Silver Strikers, Nyasa Big Bullets, Sable Farming, Karonga United, Mighty Wanderers, TN Stars, Mafco and Dedza Dynamos who earlier passed the test.

FAM licencing and compliance manager Casper Jangale yesterday said the teams had managed to beat the deadline.

He said: “The clubs managed to do what we asked them to in order to get the licences. So as of now, all the teams have been granted licences to participate in the 2022 season.”

FAM has also approved five stadiums, namely Rumphi, Civo, Mzuzu, Chitowe and Nankhaka to host matches.

Initially, FAM approved Kamuzu, Silver, Mpira, Kasungu, Balaka, Mulanje and Karonga stadiums after the first round of inspection.

Jangale said: “We did the second round of inspection and the five stadiums have worked on their shortfalls. They are now good to go.”

Rumphi United general secretary Jones Mockton said they were relieved to get FAM’s approval.

He said: “Now we can play our matches at our home. That is a big boost for us ahead of the season.

“We are very happy that we have managed to take TNM Super League football to the people of Rumphi.”

Rumphi District fans will sample their first-ever TNM Super League action on Saturday as the hosts welcome fellow rookies Dedza Dynamos.

However, Dedza Stadium is still not fit and the club has opted for Balaka Stadium.

Dedza Dynamos general secretary Mabvuto Mugode said they opted for Balaka Stadium to give more time for their stadium’s renovations.

He said: “We felt the stadium needs more time to finish some of the renovations. At least the whole first round. We have been playing our pre-season matches at Balaka Stadium and we think it’s the best alternative.

“Despite being far, Balaka is a good stadium and the patronage there is good.”

Sulom general secretary Williams Banda said all was set for the kick-off.
