Rumphi community hails transformative project
The community around Jalawe, Sub-Traditional Authority Njikhula in Rumphi District says the Community Transformation Programme that Karonga Diocese of the Catholic Church is implementing has transformed their lives.
In an interview on Monday, community member Dyless Mkandawire said they have embraced modern farming methods and the use of Mbeya fertiliser.
She said: “Since the project began in 2022, we have learned how to make Mbeya fertiliser to conserve the environment. We have also embraced modern farming methods that have helped us realise bumper yield.
“We also have backyard gardens where we grow vegetables.”
Mkandawire also thanked the diocese for running a non-communicable disease (NCD) mobile clinic in the area.
“During such outreach programmes, people get screened for blood pressure, diabetes, cervical cancer and other NCDs,” she said.
On his part, group village head Lunkhoti said the diocese sank two boreholes which have improved access to potable water.
He said: “This area is close to the main road which produces dust which contaminated water sources. But that is now history.
“Clean water is essential for personal hygiene. Remember, only healthy people can contribute towards the development of their area.”
Rumphi district commissioner Emmanuel Bulukutu commended the diocese for the initiative.
“We will work with the diocese to upgrade the gravitation water scheme and extended water supply to more communities,” said Bulukutu.
The diocese, with support from the United States of America-based Cross Catholic Outreach, is working with 99 households in Jalawe.
