CCJP engages local structures in Chitipa on right to food
Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) has urged Wenya Area Development Committee (ADC) in Chitipa District to engage duty-bearers on people’s right to food.
On Monday, CCJP introduced its three-year project in the district to run under the Malawi Conference of the Catholic Bishops.

In her presentation, CCJP national office coordinator Stella Zimba Wella said the project targets over 15 000 beneficiaries and 45 000 indirect beneficiaries in Kalowe, Sekwa and Temwamukondo village development committees.
She said: “We conducted an assessment in the area which revealed challenges related to food production. There is limited access to food for most vulnerable groups, including smallholder farmers and women-headed families.
“Therefore, the project will empower people to know their right to food.”
Wenya CCJP project officer Moses Mwakisalu described the project as important, saying the people of Wenya will now know their right to food and engage duty-bearers to safeguard it.
“Many people do not know that they have right to food and end up starving. We, therefore, want the community to engage duty-bearers to ensure food is available,” he said.
Wenya ADC chairperson Grace Kayira commended CCJP for the project, saying it will help them engage duty-bearers on food availability.
With funding from Deustsche Welthungerhilfe, CCJP is implementing the Strengthening Rural Governance for the Right to Adequate Food in the district
