Young poet James Phiri triumphs

Young poet James Phiri on Saturday won the Poetry Association of Malawi Central Region Chapter competition held at Madison Square in Lilongwe.

Speaking in an interview, he said poets need to be honest, bold and speak the truth with purpose because their voices can improve minds and hearts.

Said Phiri: “To me, poetry is both a mirror and a bridge. It is a mirror because it reflects the deepest parts of who we are, our pain, our joy, our questions, our faith and our flaws. It gives shape to emotions that can’t always be spoken plainly.

“Poetry is a bridge that connects people across boundaries, language, culture and experience. It can make a stranger feel understood, a community feel seen and wounded hearts heal.”

He walked away with K100 000, a cup, T-shirt and a bag.

Presidential adviser on creative arts Qabaniso Malewezi said poets should work on their personal and professional if they are to grow the industry.

“The industry should grow with the business aspect and look at things which might bring them something as a poet. I hope many events like this one will continue,” he said.

Poetry Association of Malawi Central Region Chapter secretary Gedion Thole said the show was sold out and everyone liked it.

Tchaway Media, Fire Flame and Art Sacco sponsored the event.
