Nomads target group stages in CAF tourney

Mighty Wanderers have said they will be targeting to qualify for the group stages of the 2025/26 edition of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The club’s chairperson for football development directorate Tiya Somba Banda also said they believe the team is ready to compete in the tournament expected to kick off in August.

He said: “Our aim is to compete not just to participate and it is our vision to make the group stages because that is where we believe the real competition is and you are also assured of prize money.

“For us to achieve that, we need to have a strong squad… Not only a strong squad, but also good depth.

“We also believe that the technical panel is capable enough to make into that space.”

Somba Banda also said should there be need for reinforcements, they will be advised accordingly by the technical panel.

The club’s legend Joseph Kamwendo said going by their current performance, the Nomads look ready.

He said: “I think with good preparations and reinforcements in defence, they can achieve that.

“They have a team that can compete, but they need two central defenders, otherwise the team looks strong from midfield going upfront.”

Kamwendo was part of the Nomads squad that last participated in the tournament in 2018 in which they were booted out 6-1 on aggregate by AS Vita of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He also played in CAF tournaments while with Orlando Pirates in South Africa, Club Maculmana of Mozambique and TP Mazembe of the DRC.

Wanderers are enjoying a good run in the TNM Super League so far in which they are second with 16 points from six matches. They have dropped only two points following their one-all draw against Silver Strikers.

However, they were booted out of the Airtel Top 8 in the quarter-finals by Karonga United 2-1 on aggregate.
