Bedir students celebrate Africa’s cultural diversity
Bedir International School on Saturday hosted Africa Day Cultural Festival to promote and appreciate Africa’s diverse cultural heritage.
Held at the school’s campus in Lilongwe, the event was alive with colour, music and the aroma of traditional dishes. Students dressed in traditional outfits representing African countries.

They showcased traditional dances, drama, history recitals and music from various countries, including Malawi, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Egypt, Burkina Faso and Zambia.
There was also a display of art, crafts and local dishes from across the continent.Guests were treated to popular African dishes such as jollof rice from Nigeria, Malawian nsima with chambo, Zimbabwean huridizi and Tanzanian chapati.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda commended the school for organising the celebration, saying such events strengthen African identity and unity.
“When young people learn to appreciate who they are and where they come from, they grow into confident and proud citizens. Events such as this bring us together and remind us of the cultural diversity within our continent,” he said.
The school’s vice-principal Yusuf Ibrahim said the festival is part of the school’s efforts to encourage cultural pride.
“Through this celebration, we want our learners to understand and celebrate the African diversity while also learning about other cultures on the continent,” he said.
Bongani Banda, a Form Two student, said the event not only allows them to know about Africa’s cultural diversity, but also to work together as students.
Africa Day is commemorated on May 25 to celebrate the formation of the Organisation of African Unity now the African Union.
