Mobility key in community healthcare services—NGO

Villages in Partnership country director Enea Nkhoma says provision of mobility equipment is key to enhancing patient care as well as enabling faster and frequent patient visits, especially in remote areas.

He said this on Tuesday in Zomba District when the non-governmental organisation (NGO) donated 50 bicycles to health surveillance assistants (HSAs) and ground labourers at Khanda Health Centre in Traditional Authority Nkagula in the district.

Nkhoma said the health facility, located close to Lake Chilwa, is hard-to-reach.

“The bicycles will eliminate fuel costs associated with driving, offering a financially beneficial alternative for daily commutes,” he said.

Khanda Health Centre in-charge David Brienza said that by reducing travel time and effort, the HSAs will be able to spend more time with patients.

He said reaching more patients in hard-to-access areas is vital, adding: “This will increase the quality and efficiency of healthcare.”

Speaking on behalf of fellow HSAs, Wikani Phiri said the bicycles are a vital tool for delivering healthcare in communities where transportation to health facilities is a barrier
