FAM tigthens glass bottles ban at matches

 Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has promised to tighten a ban on the sale of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks packaged in glass bottles inside and around football match venues.

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) last week prohibited the sale of glass-bottled beverages in and around stadiums, citing safety concerns.

But during last Sunday’s TNM Super League Blantyre derby at Kamuzu Stadium, vendors, including minors, openly defied the order despite police presence, turning the venue into a free-for-all alcohol market.

With yet another high-profile Blantyre derby in the FDH Bank Cup semi-final

 between FCB Nyasa Bullets and Mighty Wanderers looming, the association has thrown its weight behind the ban, promising tighter enforcement of the ban.

In an interview, FAM competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka said: “The policy is no glass bottles, but disposables only. We allow the sale of alcohol, but in designated controlled areas.”

On the issue of minors selling alcohol, he said they will tackle the matter during today’s preparatory meeting.

Said Zakazaka: “We have a stakeholders meeting on Friday [today] to plan for the match, and obviously, we will also look at some critical issues from the last game, including the sale of alcohol issue, which we should address for
