Silver switch focus to 2nd place battle

Dethroned TNM Super League champions Silver Strikers have shifted their focus to a second-place finish, having failed to defend the title.

The Bankers, who are third with 60 points from 28 matches, host relegation battlers Mzuzu City Hammers this afternoon at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.

A win for the Reserve Bank of Malawi-sponsored outfit will see them tie on 63 points with second-placed FCB Nyasa Bullets ahead of their final games this Saturday, but the People’s Team have a better seven goal difference compared to Silver.

Hammers, on the other hand, lie 14th in the 16-team league with 28 points from 28 matches.

Silver coach Peter ‘Shoes’ Mgangira in an interview yesterday said  they will try to make the best of their remaining games.

“The best that we can finish is second position. So, we will fight for maximum points starting with tomorrow’s [today] match,” he said.

However, Mgangira acknowledged that they expect a tough game.

He said: “We will be up against a side fighting to avoid relegation, so it will not be easy at all We are not taking it lightly.

“It will also be one way of saying thanks to our fans who have been with us throughout the season.”

Mgangira also congratulated Wanderers for winning the title.

His Hammers’ counterpart Elias Chirambo said both their remaining matches are a must-win if they are to avoid the chop from the top-flight league.

“We are not giving up hope, we will fight to the end and we are determined to give out our best,” he said.

In other matches, Goshen City Dedza Dynamos, who are also in danger of being relegated, host Creck Sporting Club of Lilongwe at Dedza Stadium.

Dedza are a step above the relegation zone with 31 points from 28 matches.

Lilongwe-based Blue eagles host another relegation-threatened side Mighty Tigers from Blantyre at Nankhaka Stadium in Lilongwe while Karonga United face Civil Service United at Karonga Stadium.

Meanwhile, Sulom has shifted Wanderers’ home match against Kamuzu Barracks from Balaka Stadium to Bingu National Stadium (BNS) in Lilongwe.

Nomads’ chief executive officer Panganeni Ndovi said being an event where they will be crowned champions, they felt BNS would be an ideal venue befitting the occasion.
