Gaba picks his Afcon last 4
As the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations heads towards the climax with the quarter-finals kicking off this evening, Flames captain Gabadinho Mhango has tipped the scales for Senegal, hosts Morocco, Algeria and Egypt to make it to the semis.
Today, Mali’s Eagles take on Senegal’s Lions of Teranga in an all-West African affair while Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions date the Atlas Lions of Morocco.

Tomorrow, Algeria’s Desert Foxes face Nigeria’s Super Eagles while Egypt’s Pharaohs engage holders Ivory Coast’s Elephants.
In an interview on Wednesday, Mhango, who has also been engaged as a pundit by SuperSport TV, said: “Senegal and Mali will be too close to call, but I believe Senegal have an edge courtesy of their experience and tactical discipline.”
On the match between Cameroon and Morocco, the South Africa-based striker, who was third joint top scorer at the delayed 2021 Afcon edition in Cameroon, said: “This should be another tough one, but I will go for the hosts as their unique possession playing style and, above all, an anticipated vocal home support, should see them through.”
He also said he sees Algeria stunning Nigeria.
“They will take each other to the limit, but I think Algeria will win it in either extra time or penalties,” said the Bay United forward.
But while Mhango is tipping the odds in favour of three North African teams, veteran football players’ scout Ben Chiwaya believes that at least three West African teams will sail through.
He said: “The North African teams have not really set the stage alight while the West Africans, especially Senegal and Ivory Coast are playing free-flowing football. They are also physical and tactical.
“Tomorrow’s [this evening] showdown between Cameroon and Morocco provides a stern test for the hosts, but I think Cameroon’s physical structure and tactical discipline should prevail.”
