The Malawi Men’s National Cricket Team is confident of making a breakthrough in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Africa Qualifier B in Accra, Ghana, despite a poor start to the campaign.
The team’s new captain Gift Kansonkho, speaking after the team registered an eight-wicket loss to Tanzania in their opener on Tuesday at Achimota Senior Secondary School, said it was a challenging opening for us, they drew valuable lessons to build on moving forward.
According to a statement from International Cricket Council, batting first, Malawi struggled to gain momentum against a disciplined Tanzanian bowling unit.
“Regular wickets disrupted any chance of building partnerships, as Tanzania maintained tight control throughout the innings,” reads the statement.
Malawi was eventually bowled out for 77/10 in 19.1 overs, a total that left them with little margin for error. Tanzania’s bowlers executed their plans to perfection, applying consistent pressure and limiting scoring opportunities.

At press time yesterday, Malawi were expected to take on hosts Ghana in their second fixture.
According to ICC website, icc-cricket.com, Malawi will also face Eswatini tomorrow, Seychelles on Saturday and St Helena on Sunday.
Top two teams will make the grade for the next qualifier.
