Speaking on Friday during the training at Kambenene Primary School, Karonga district principal gender development officer Ireen Mwenelupembe commended MHRRC and Sprodeta for supporting the survivors with skills to make their own income.

“This training is important because it has taken a new approach from the usual prevention and response. This resonates with government’s policy which encourages capacity building in entrepreneurship skills to empower them economically,” she said.

MHRRC programmes officer Lyness Soko said the initiative seeks to empower GBV survivors economically.

“We expect them to embark on soap-making business and work as a group to supply the product to shops in their communities,” she said.

Sprodeta project coordinator Silver Mtambo described the training as important to vulnerable populations.

“We, therefore, urge survivors to utilise the skills and knowledge accordingly to sustain their lives,” he said.

One of the participants, Melai Msowoya said the training will enable her generate income for her family.

MHRRC and Sprodeta are implementing the projects in the area with a joint funding from Norwegian Church Aid and DanChurchAid
