Save the Children trains NGO in governance

Save the Children Malawi partnership and sub-award manager William Luhanga says well empowered non-governmental organisations (NGOs) help to promote good governance needed for societies to thrive.

He said this on Tuesday in Liwonde during a training of staff of Youth for Development and Productivity (Yodep) Organisation facilitated by Save the Children Malawi.

Luhanga said Yodep has been equipped with practical skills to assess their own organisation across critical areas in governance, human resources, finance, programming, advocacy and resource mobilisation.

“Impactful organisations are not built on passion alone, but on strong systems, accountability and continuous learning,” he said.

Yodep board chairperson Stephano Joseph challenged the staff to capitalise on patriotism, saying it fosters loyalty, productivity and creates a shared purpose that strengthens team cohesion.

“Collective commitment encourages collaborative and team-oriented work,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the staff, Yodep executive director McBlessings Buda said the skills will improve the organisation’s shared purpose and teamwork.

He said when employees have control over their work, their contributions feel more meaningful, leading to higher intrinsic motivation.

“Decentralising power structures encourages a culture of innovation by removing barriers to new ideas,” he said.

The initiative is part of the organisation’s shift power programme, implemented by Tilitonse Foundation in partnership with Comic Relief and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (UK Aid).
