Minister says Mzuni library contract woes cleared
Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has said government has resolved outstanding contractual issues for the stalled Mzuzu University (Mzuni) library project.
The Malawi Government embarked on the Mzuni Library, Auditorium and Association Works Complex Project in 2020 at a cost of K7 billion before the cost rose to K27 billion as at December 2025.

The project requires a total of K13 billion to finalise while the government has allocated K5 billion.
Speaking yesterday during a tour of Mzuni, Minister of Education, Science and Technology Bright Msaka said the contractor, China State Construction Engineering Limited will resume work following the resolution of contractual issues.
“The contractor was paid all his dues and the money is available for the completion of the project.
“There is no doubt the contractor will return on the project site because there is no outstanding financial issue with the contractor. The contractor will start receiving the budgeted funds upon commencement of the project,” he said.
Mzuni Vice-Chancellor Professor Wales Singini confirmed resolving outstanding contractual issues through the Attorney General.
He said: “I must say here that this project has not experienced any financial constraint but contractual issues with the contractor. We engaged the contractor two weeks ago requesting to resume the work.
“Completion for the project will require 56 weeks once the contractor commences the works but I can’t tell when the contractor will resume the work.”
Singini banked on the next Mid-Year Budget Review to allocate additional funds besides K5 billion to complete the project within the stipulated time-frame.
In an earlier interview, National Anti-Corruption Alliance chairperson Michael Kaiyatsa said project overruns waste resources that could have been used to fix hospitals, build schools and create jobs.
