Blantyre mayor dares young people

Blantyre City Council mayor Isaac Jomo Osman has urged young people pursuing various educational goals to believe in their abilities, saying education alone is not enough to guarantee financial success.

He made the remarks yesterday in Blantyre when Sanwecka Tech Companion brought together some of its graduates and financial institutions, including commercial banks to facilitate their easier access to loans for entrepreneurship.

Said Osman: “Education on its own cannot make someone prosper. There is a need for passion and hard work.

“We fail in some areas as a country because we do not give young people the right message.”

Sanwecka Tech Companion chief executive officer Rashid Kasito said the institution has partnered banks and other financial institutions to improve graduates’ access to business financing.

He also said Sanwecka is extending support to Malawians returning from South Africa following the recent anti-immigrant violence.

“We will provide rapid skills training at a discounted fee so that people can immediately start technology-based businesses and earn a living,” said Kasito.

One of the beneficiaries, Clinton Nyasulu of Chitawira Township in Blantyre and specialises in construction work, including manufacturing ceiling boards, hailed the institution for linking him with financiers.

Sanwecka Tech, which was established in 2013, offers training in technical and ICT-related fields, including the repair of electronic gadgets, motorcycle maintenance, video and audio production and other technology-based trades.
