Church unveils plans to support 50 000 children by 20230

Compassion International Malawi has announced plans to target 50 000 vulnerable children by 2030 through its sponsorship programme as it expands partnerships with local churches in the country.

The organisation currently supports at least 29 000 children through child development programmes that address their spiritual, academic, health and socio-economic needs.

Speaking on Friday during the organisation’s fifth anniversary staff recognition dinner in Lilongwe, acting national director Timothy Zimba said they remain committed to releasing children from poverty by investing in their development.

“Imagine 18 or 20 years from now, many of these children will be university graduates, engineers, lawyers, bankers, teachers, entrepreneurs and other professionals contributing to the country’s growth,” he said.

Zimba  said the organisation is implementing its 2030 strategic plan to increase the number of church partners from 127 to 200 while expanding its sponsorship programme to about 50 000 children.

The organisation’s board vice-chairperson the Reverend Douglas Kulaisi said they will continue working with the government and development partners to improve the lives of vulnerable children.

He said that more than 498 children under the sponsorship programme has progressed to universities, colleges and technical and vocational education institutions.

In his remarks, partnership facilitator Lawrence Chiwaya said the organisation’s five-year journey was marked by growth although accessing church partners in remote areas remains a major challenge affecting programme implementation.
