NGO equips single mothers in Blantyre with life skills
Single Mothers Empowerment Organisation founder Vennia Bakali has urged single mothers to remain resilient despite the hardships of raising their children.
She was speaking on Saturday at Nyambadwe Primary School in Ndirande Township, Blantyre, during the launch of a safe space for single mothers.
“This forum will help restore dignity and strengthen single mothers’ livelihoods. The safe space support group offers single mothers a place where they can express themselves and get support without being judged,” said Bakali.
She said many single mothers carry the weight of raising children alone while facing financial challenges, emotional stress and social stigma.

Said Bakali: “Through these support groups, they are able to connect with other women who understand their experiences, share advice and encourage one another.
“We also provide mentorship, life skills, access to information and opportunities for personal and economic empowerment.”
A single mother, Cecilia Banda from Mpembu in the township, said the initiative will help her share experiences with others, which will help her to heal and rebuild her life.
Another single mother, Lennie Mpunga from Makata in the township said many people view them as husband snatchers or prostitutes, which is not the case.
Ndirande Police Station victim support unit officer Zelifa Mulli said many single mothers face abuse.
She said: “Many women, including single mothers, face abuse from men. The initiative will help them build a sustainable future.
“Single mothers should take this safe space seriously to find answers to challenges they face.”
