Chitipa district commissioner Charles Mhone has commended the Right to Food project for complementing government’s efforts ensuring that every citizen has access to adequate food.
Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting with Wenya Community members, he said the country’s constitution recognises the right to food as part of the State’s responsibility.

“I thank the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace [CCJP] of the Karonga Diocese for implementing the project. The government introduced the Farm Inputs Subsidy Programme [Fisp] as one of the interventions to fulfil its obligation of ensuring food security for Malawians,” said Mhone.
He acknowledged that some beneficiaries in Chitipa South, particularly in Wenya, experienced challenges in redeeming their farm inputs during the last farming season with about 36 percent failing to collect their inputs.
“The distribution of farm inputs to selling points was affected by impassable roads during the rainy season,” said Mhone.
CCJP assistant programme manager Stella Zimba Wella thanked the council for supporting the implementation of the project.
“We hope the commitments made by the district council, especially on prioritising hard-to-reach areas in the distribution of Fisp, will be fulfilled during this farming season,” she said.
Wenya Community Action Group chairperson Veronica Mwandira said that the meeting provided an important platform for communities to engage duty-bearers.
With financial support from Welthungerhilfe, CCJP is running the project in the district under the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops.
