Bullets coach bemoans long break

FCB Nyasa Bullets head coach Wedson Nyirenda has lamented the just-ended FDH Bank Premiership mid-season break, saying it was “unnecessarily” long.

The Zambian mentor was commenting on his team’s sluggish first-half performance against Standard Bank Blue Eagles FC on Sunday, which the People’s Team won 2-0 at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre.

Bullets scored both goals in the second half after shaking off some first half lethargy.

He said: “Mid-season break should be only two weeks, but this one was five weeks. Normally, off-season is supposed to be five to six weeks. So, in essence, it was another off season within a season.

“So, under the circumstances, I knew that my players would be rusty.”

Nevertheless, Nyirenda said his team still showed that they are serious title-contenders.

“We have shown that we are truly a championship team in the making, but we know that it is not going to be easy as every team will be on us,” he said.

In justifying the lengthy break last month, Super League of Malawi general secretary Williams Banda said in essence teams would rest for two weeks while the other two weeks was for international engagements.

“Be that as it may, we wil stick to the calendar and finish the season in March 2027,” he said.

The second round of the top-flight league kicked off on October 10.

Bullets lead the 16-team flagship league with 33 points from 16 matches, a point above their second-placed arch-rivals Mighty Wanderers, who edged Silver Strikers 1-0 on Saturday. Eagles are third with 31 points.
