AfDB dares procurement professionals to uphold ethics
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has urged procurement professionals to uphold the tenets of their profession by desisting from engaging in corrupt practices.
AfDB group country manager Macmillan Anyanwu said this on Thursday at Sunbird Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi during this year’s Malawi Institute of Procurement and Supply (Mips) Annual Lakeshore Conference held under the theme ‘Demystifying the hidden costs of procurement and supply chain management’.
He said: “The profession you are in needs total integrity and professionalism.
“It needs people who are devoted to it and who can say no to corruption. Therefore, let me challenge you all to stick to the dictates of the profession.”

Anyanwu said the profession is prone to corruption and other vices, as such, there is need to shrug off all evils.
He told the participants that corruption is a major source of leakage of resources in the public and private sectors.
Mips board chairperson, David Ngonamo called on the procurement professionals to look at ways of saving money and make benefits to leverage activities at their institutions.
“It is high time we fashioned out better strategies to reduce the costs we incur in the procurement and the whole supply chain management,” he said.
Ngonamo said the profession is not a “saint” because there are people who also get involved in corrupt practices.
Speaking earlier, Mips president Mirriam Jere asked the procurement professionals to make an impact in the country through their works by being relevant.
“When we have problems of forex shortage, you need to rise to the occasion and remain relevant to the country,” she said.
Jere urged procurement professionals to always adhere to the rules and regulations of the profession.
Mips is a membership body for the procurement and supply professionals which was established under an Act of Parliament.
The institute regulates the profession and develop the interests of the professionals in all sectors.
It also has the overall mandate to promote professionalism in procurement and supply in Malawi.
