The Alliance for Democracy (Aford) has again postponed its convention which was scheduled to take place on August 23 and 24 2013 at Marymount Secondary School in Mzuzu.

This is the third postponement of the convention.

A media statement signed by Aford publicity secretary Dan Msowoya ruled out financial woes as the reason for the postponement.

“The national conference organising committee has given due cognizance of the desire of our colleagues from other parties such as the National Rainbow Coalition [Narc], the National Patriotic Front [NPF] and PDM [People’s Development Movement] to participate in the national convention and therefore, the necessity to prepare themselves,” he said.

Msowoya said the party is pleading for patience and understanding. He also said that the postponement will help other members who felt left out to join and contribute to the convention.

In an interview on Monday, Msowoya reiterated the need to wait for the inclusion of other parties.

“They [Narc, NPF, and PDM] want to be part of the convention and it was fair to wait for them. We do not want to be seen or being accused of being power hungry hence the waiting,” said Msowoya.

Asked when the convention will take place, the publicity secretary mentioned of September although the venue could change, he said.

Already, four parties have gone to the convention. They are the People’s Party (PP), the United Democratic Front (UDF), the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

Malawi President Joyce Banda, Atupele Muluzi, Peter Mutharika and the Reverend Lazarus Chakwera will represent the parties in respective order during next year’s polls.
