American Grammy Award winning jazz master Earl Klugh will headline this year’s Standard Bank Joy of Jazz concert on September 21 in Lilongwe.

In a response to a Twitter enquiry from a South African fan on when he would be coming back to South Africa, the Jazz maestro said:

“I hope to be back soon! Will be in Malawi and Mozambique in September!”

Announcing the decision, head of marketing Chimwemwe Matonga said: “Following the success of last year’s concert with Zahara, our new and existing customers have settled for Earl Klugh. Come September 2013, Standard Bank customers should look forward to an exciting night with a jazz master, supported by a Malawian jazz crooner.”

Matonga said by popular demand, customers have been nominating Earl Klugh internally through Standard Bank’s branch network.

“The bank has granted their wish. They’ll have Earl Klugh, and for those customers whose choice of jazz artists was different, we encourage them to look forward to 2014 when we’ll repeat the process. We would like to thank our customers for helping us decide who to bring to this year’s Joy of Jazz,” he said.

In keeping with the format of the concert, he further said Standard Bank will choose a local artist to partner Earl, in due course.

Tickets are on sale in Standard Bank designated branches as well as other outlets.

Joy of Jazz is a thematic jazz festival owned and sponsored by the Standard Bank group. It takes place annually in August.

Born on September 16 1953 in Detroit, Michigan, Earl Klugh is a jazz fusion guitarist and composer. He has collaborated with the likes of Bob James, George Benson and Roberta Flack.

He has won several grammies and sold millions of records and CDs.

In 2006 Modern Guitar Magazine cited Klugh as “one of the finest acoustic guitar players alive today.”
