Aglit hands over bicycles, chalk boards to facilitators

The Adolescent Girls Literacy (Aglit) on Thursday handed over 30 bicycles and chalk boards to facilitators of Malimba and Thambani learning centres in Mwanza.

Speaking at the ceremony, chairperson of Aglit board of trustees Roy Hauya said the bicycles were donated to motivate the facilitators.

“By motivating the facilitators, we will improve our chances of providing a second chance to girls who dropped out of school to return to the classroom and continue with their education. If we achieve this, we shall have a literate and development-conscious generation. Development suffers when people are illiterate,” said Hauya.

He said educated girls tend to practise healthy behaviours, avoid risky lifestyles and make wise decisions.

Hauya urged chiefs to encourage girls to attend the informal schools run by Aglit.

“Let’s change the mindset to defeat the conflict of responsibilities that arises between school and family, especially for those attending school while married. We must also bear in mind that illiteracy brings misunderstandings,” he said.

Andrew Chinjati, facilitator for Malimba Zone, described the bicycle donation as the engine for the project.

“Now, we will be able to reach out to as many students as possible,” said Chingati.
