Some political party leaders in Mchinji have expressed satisfaction with the registration process for the 2014 Tripartite Elections in the district.

Speaking during a meeting the National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust held on Thursday at Kamwendo Trading Centre, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) district chairperson Crispin Banda said the exercise was a major success.

Banda hailed Nice and the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for conducting a successful campaign to urge people to register.

“As MCP, we are pleased with the way the exercise was carried out. Let me applaud Nice and MEC for their tireless efforts in encouraging people to register,” he said.

But Banda expressed concern that some registration clerks were slow, a situation he said resulted in some people being turned back.

His Alliance for Democracy (Aford) counterpart Nicholus Kamoto also hailed the exercise.

He said this was the case because of good coordination between parties, Nice and MEC.

According to Kamoto, MEC staff was quick and timely in responding to problems some registration centres were experiencing.

“Due to bad weather, the equipment could break down but we are grateful that MEC technicians would respond timely. This ensured that the registration process was not affected,” he said.

But Kamoto said two weeks was not enough for the exercise as registration clerks were slow and spent a whole week familiarising themselves with the work.

Other leaders present during the meeting were from the People’s Party (PP), People’s Transformation Party (Petra) and United Democratic Front (UDF) who also said they were satisfied with the exercise.
