The Scottish Government says it is impressed with the way some non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the country are using the funding they receive from Scotland.

Scottish Government development manager Jenny Simons said this on Thursday after visiting projects implemented by the Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services (AGREDS), a development arm of the Assemblies of God Church, in Traditional Authority (T/A) Pemba in Salima.

“It’s been a fantastic opportunity and a very wonderful situation seeing the money we are giving them is being utilised as intended. We have witnessed the afforestation projects and safe water provision to the community in the area. I am very grateful and impressed,” said Simons

She said her government is committed to improving the lives of poor Malawians by helping them to access clean water and take part in fighting the effects of climate change.

AGREDS executive director John Kanthungo attributed the impressive performance of the projects to the active participation of communities.

“The communities we are working with deserve credit. We cannot do without them. For example, we can give them a borehole but if they are not committed it could be vandalised the same day,” said Kanthungo.

A representative of  Tearfund in Malawi Vincent Moyo said the trust that exists among stakeholders in the projects is critical to the success of the initiatives.

AGREDS receives Scottish funding through Tearfund.

AGREDS is implementing various projects in T/A Pemba in areas such as adult literacy, afforestation and climate change as well as water justice.
